My successes.

The Blooms were able to obtain funding for their franchise in Oakland from the Small Business Administration (SBA) loan program. They also worked with the Oakland Business Development System and Main Street Launch. Their business continues to generate jobs for caregivers and eldercare experts.

What inspired you to start your business?

Homewatch CareGivers of Oakland provides comprehensive health and eldercare services to California’s Bay Area. Owners Benjamin and Leah Bloom manage personalized care programs for patients including physical therapy, prescription management, and nursing. In addition to quality healthcare, employees will work with clients in their own homes in order to increase their quality of life and independence. Homewatch CareGivers has proven to be a touchstone within the community with a caring, experienced staff.

How SCORE helped.

An MBA prepared Benjamin to run a business, but his SCORE mentor, Jim Carlson, helped him secure a loan. SCORE also encouraged the Blooms to network and to further develop their marketing plans. “I used to feel like I had something to prove and that asking for help meant I had failed,” says Benjamin. “But, a mentor wants you to succeed. They’re in your corner, and if you succeed, they succeed.”
